Easy Chocolate Apple Slices Valentine Treats

Looking for something to wow your sweetheart this Valentine’s Day? These Chocolate Apple Hearts are easy to make and are the perfect Valentine Treats for those you love most!

We used a heart shaped cookie cutter for their shape and then dipped  them in luscious milk chocolate before topping with candies, coconut and more.

I am all about spreading a little extra love for Valentine’s Day, but that doesn’t mean it has to break the bank.

In fact, after recently completing a basement renovation, my hubby and I decided to stick to gifts that are made from things we already have rather than going out and spending ridiculous amounts of money on shiny things neither of us need.

Now I know the way to his heart is definitely through his stomach, and anything with chocolate gets me bonus points so I immediately went to thinking about what I could make.

That’s where these adorable chocolate covered heart shaped apple slices come from! I hope you have as much fun making them as I did, I can’t wait to whip up a fresh batch just in time for Valentine’s Day in a few weeks.

Valentine treats are sweet to give

Thinking back to our dating days I always remember doing some kind of a homemade Valentine for Mr. Olive to enjoy.

One year balloons filled my room with paper hearts hanging on the strings, each had a reason as to why I loved him.

Along with that I had a buffet of his favorite candies and chocolates all nicely packed in little heart jars and containers. I think that is still one of my best gifts to date!

Part of the inspiration for these Chocolate Apples comes from the fact that he takes an apple to work every single day…talk about boring (ha!).

I thought, what’s a fun way to dress his usual apple up and really make it a special treat?! The usual popped to mind, dip the whole apple in chocolate or caramel and wrap it up in cellophane.

But, if you follow along with us you know I am anything but “usual” so I went a little further and pulled out some of my old cookie cutters to get creative.

Add in some adorable heart shaped sprinkles and candy coated chocolates and ta-da we have these perfectly delicious easy Valentine treats!

FAQ for our Chocolate Apple Valentine Treats

Here are a few of my best tips before I get to answering the questions I know ya’ll have.

  • Use apples that are firm and slightly tart. Some good ones would be Granny Smith, Red Delicious,  and Honeycrisp.
  • Pick the largest ones you can find, this will make it so much easier to cut out your heart shapes.
    • If your apple isn’t quite as large as your cutter you can cut away some of the outside and use the middle section (before the core) that’s what we did with these Gala apples!
  • Be creative with your toppings! I raided my baking cupboard and found almost everything I needed to make my chocolate apple slices festive.

How to make chocolate covered apple slices

They are really quite simple to make, I even encourage you to get the kiddos in the kitchen to help with this one.

Depending on their age you may want to melt the chocolate ahead of time, but the rest of the fun can be for the entire family.

Apple on cutting board with bottom cut flat.

First start by washing your apples and allowing them to dry. We then cut the bottom of the apple off to make it easier for slicing the apple.

You will then cut the apple into 1/2″ slices and set aside (I sprinkled them with lemon juice to prevent browning). Using your cookie cutter you will then press it into the apple slices to get the perfect heart shape.

Once that’s done you melt your chocolate using a double broiler and dip each apple to coat. Immediately add on any sprinkles and toppings you want and allow to set in the refrigerator until firm. I placed some of mine on large skewers, and others I simply laid on sheet of parchment paper.

How long do chocolate covered apples last?

If you prep and store them properly you can make your apples 2 days ahead of when you want to eat them. As I mentioned above, I sprinkled the slices with lemon juice before coating in chocolate, this was to help prevent browning.

Once they are coated in chocolate and covered in candies and sprinkles of your choice, you will want to allow them to fully set and harden in the fridge for at least 2 hours. If you are wanting to save them for a couple of days you will want to then transfer them to a sealed container and keep them in the fridge until ready to eat. I recommend using parchment paper between the layers if you cannot keep them in a single layer.

Chocolate Dipped Apple Hearts with heart sprinkles and candy coated chocolate

Chocolate Apple Hearts are easy to make and are the perfect Valentine Treats for those you love most

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 5 minutes
Additional Time 2 hours
Total Time 2 hours 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 large Apples Granny Smith, Red Delicious etc
  • 1 cup Milk Chocolate Chips
  • 1 tbsp Lemon Juice
  • 1 package Candy Coated Chocolate we used M&Ms
  • 1 cup Shredded Coconut
  • Valentine Sprinkles and Hearts

Instructions

  1. Wash apples thoroughly and dry. Slice the bottom of the apple off to create a level surface for cutting. Cut each apple into 1/2" slices, avoiding the core. Place apple slices in small bowl and sprinkle with lemon juice. Gently shake to coat.

  2. Set up your "topping stations" so everything is ready to go when your apples are dipped. I simply placed my candies, coconut, sprinkles etc in little dishes that were shallow and easy to grab from. You will also want to prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper for your apples to rest on.

  3. Using your cookie cutters, gently press into apple slices to create your hearts. This is where you can choose to skewer some of your apples if you want them on a stick.

  4. Set a small pot with 2" water on stove at medium heat. Place a heat-safe bowl in the pot (that DOESN'T touch the bottom) to use as your double broiler. Add chocolate chips and allow to slowly melt from the steam of the double broiler, stirring every 1-2 minutes.

  5. Once chocolate is melted, gently dip each apple until coated and gently tap on the side of bowl to remove excess. Add your toppings right away, gently pressing in if using candy coated chocolates or larger sprinkles that could fall off.

  6. Place on your prepared sheet and place in the fridge to set for 2 hrs before transferring to a sealed container.

  7. Don't toss your apple scraps or leftover chocolate! I enjoyed a nice treat once I was done making my Chocolate Covered Apples, by dipping the scraps in the chocolate and adding some of the coconut!

Notes

If you have a slice that breaks, don't worry! I used a little bit of the melted chocolate to mend my broken heart and placed it in the fridge to set while I worked on the others. It was good as new when I dipped it later!

You could even do this with melons and pineapple to create a really special treat that your Valentine would love. I think it would be great for the kids lunchboxes too!

Imagine their surprise when they open their lunch to find these delicious chocolate apples inside. Let me know if you make them and what you chose to use for your special toppings.
