Obviously when making this delicious dessert bread you need to have Nutella on hand (or your favorite hazelnut spread) but what other ingredients do you need?
You will need your typical baked goods ingredients like milk, butter, eggs, sugar , oil and salt. But you will also need to have instant dry yeast on hand.
The instant yeast is what makes the bread rise quickly so you can have it in the oven in less time than a bread recipe that requires multiple rises. You want to make sure you have fresh yeast, not a packet that has been in the cupboard for 2 years as it will affect its ability to do the hard work.
Another benefit of using instant yeast in this recipe is that it does not require a warm liquid in order to activate it, it is simply added in with the other dry ingredients and mixed to create the dough.
How to make Nutella Bread with a Twist
There are a few steps to make this bread, but stick with me friends and you will be so happy you did.
Combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt in a small bowl. Add in eggs and milk and mix to break yolks, add dry ingredient mix until dough comes together. I prefer to do this in my stand mixer with the dough hook attached, but you can also do this step by hand with a wooden spoon.
Add in butter slowly, adding just a few cubes at a time, until incorporated. Continue mixing until dough is completely smooth, elastic and shiny. It will look soft and might be sticky – that’s ok as we will roll and knead it out after.
Transfer dough to a large bowl brushed with oil and cover with plastic wrap. Place in the fridge overnight. When ready to make the bread leave dough at room temperature until it’s easy to work with, 30-60 minutes.
Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface and roll into a rectangle. Position dough so that the long side is closest to you. Spread half of the Nutella over the rectangle. If you find the Nutella isn’t spread well you can heat it for a few seconds in the microwave.
Use both hands to roll up the rectangle starting from the long side closest to you and ending at the other long end. It will look like a tube of dough. Use both hands to even out the roll into a perfect thick cigar and rest it on its seam.
Cut the roll in half lengthwise, dividing the log into two long even halves. With the cut sides facing up, gently press together one end of each half, then lift the right half over the left half. Repeat this process to create the “twist” in the bread.
Cover dough loosely with plastic wrap and put in fridge to chill for 10 minutes. In the meantime, preheat oven to 370F and create a simple egg wash by beating 1 egg and 1 tablespoon of water.
Remove dough from fridge and brush with egg wash. Place in a greased loaf pan and bake in prepared oven and allow to cool before slicing.
How to Store Nutella Bread
As with any bread you want to make sure you keep it stored in an airtight bag or container to keep it fresher for longer. In our house we could devour this entire loaf in a day (not recommended ha!) which is why I actually prefer to cut it in half and freeze one portion for later.
Can you Freeze this Bread?
Yes, I like to freeze half of the loaf so we have it for later. Be sure to allow the bread to cool completely, even waiting until the day after baking, before placing it in an airtight produce bag or container to keep it from getting freezer burned. TIP – slice the bread before freezing to make it even easier to enjoy.
When you are ready to enjoy simply take out the amount of slices you want and do a gentle heat in the microwave for a quick defrost.
