Summertime Treats

One thing I love the most about the hotter days that summer brings is the incredible and in-season fresh fruit that we can start enjoying again – like watermelon and berries!

In fact, we have a couple of delicious popsicle recipes using fresh berries you can make to help cool you off when those summer heatwaves come rolling in. Be sure to try our Raspberry Lemonade Popsicle or Strawberry Greek Yogurt Popsicle after a day in the sun picking fresh berries from a local farm.

Now, on to these fruit kabobs! As I mentioned above, they are super easy to make and are even a fun way to get the kids in the kitchen helping since there is no sharp knives involved (thank you cookie cutters!).

Frequently Asked Questions

What size skewers for fruit kabobs

This will all depend on what you are planning to do with your fruit, but in most cases a 6” skewer is a great length to get a good amount of fruit on without weighing it down for little hands.

What to put on fruit skewers

Our fruit skewers use watermelon and blueberries but you can easily add in yogurt covered raisins or marshmallows for a hint of white to your patriotic treats. To serve fruit kabobs throughout the year you can do a mixture of any of your favorite fruits like cantaloupe, apples, raspberries, strawberries etc! We also have a fun dessert skewer in our Perfect Picnic post you need to try if you love brownies and berries together.

How to display fruit skewers

There are two options for displaying your skewers. The first on is to simply lay them on a large platter or tray with the sticks slightly hanging over the edge to make it easier to grab without touching them all. When trying to make a statement with my kabobs I prefer to serve them standing up which can be done easily by piercing them into a floral foam block or cardboard box covered in fun wrapping paper. If you have a cake pop stand you might even be able to use that!

How to make fruit skewers ahead of time

If you want to make your skewers ahead of time be sure to wash and dry all of the fresh fruit so it isn’t too wet on the stick (with the exception of the watermelon of course). Then you can simply assemble the skewers and place on a cooling/wire rack over a plate in the fridge to keep them from sitting in their juices. Be sure to cover them with plastic wrap to keep them from drying out and serve within 24 hours.

Prep Time 20 minutes
Total Time 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 medium Watermelon; sliced into 1" rounds
  • 1 container Blueberries
  • 12 Bamboo Skewers

Instructions

Slice watermelon into 1" rounds. Turn the slices flat and cut with star cookie cutter. A mid size cookie cutter works the best.

Place the star at the top of the skewer.

Wash blueberries and feed them up the skewer.

The fruit skewers can be kept in fridge until ready to serve.

Notes

Slice the watermelon rounds evenly as it is easier to press the cookie cutter through and remove the fruit without it breaking.
